Hebron glass

Hebron is well-known for its beautiful glass vases. However, few people know that the industry now uses recycled glass.

Glass- blowing was invented in this region several thousand years ago. There has been a glass industry in Hebron for over 600 years. In the past the glass was made from sand and soda ash. Nowadays, most of it is made from old bottle and broken glass. Workers collect used glass and smash it into small pieces before they put it into very hot ovens. It is heated until it becomes liquid.
Liquid glass is blown through pipes. The workers make it into the shape they want. Hebron is famous for dark blue jugs and vases, but the factories also make dark yellow, red and green glass.

The modern way to make glass in Hebron helps the environment in three ways:
1- Waste glass is collected and recycles. It doesn't pollute the environment.
2- New resources aren't needed to make the glass.
3- Broken glass becomes liquid at a lower temperature than sand. As a result, less fuel is
needed to heat the ovens.
